Barbie: From Doll to Icon

She may looks fake, well in fact she's fake and more so make in plastic. But to me, she's simply irresistible. Imagine, at her current age of 48 (born in 1959), she still looks so pretty, so chio. Well aboden.. who would want to collect an old woman doll wor?

Then I deem not many people know that Barbie, the most famous doll in the world, has a first & last name (namely Barbie Millicent Roberts), parents (Robert & Margareth Roberts), and a way to consult her horoscope (sign of Leo).

In the real world such humanistic identification definitely can be perplexing, since all of us habitually view toys as simple consumer products.

To invest a doll with such realistic attributes, however, makes me find the game a little more interesting. It imbues her with a credibility that, as we shall see, is the most significant aspect of this woman in miniature, and the driving force behind her success.

The fact that she is an "adult", at 11½ inches tall has allowed, and continues to allow, a multitude of little gals and adolescents access to the forbidden world of grownups, imitating the adult's habits and attitudes courtesy of the imaginative metamorphosis that occurs in children's play.

This adult universe of glamorous appearances is recreated around Barbie, who certainly can't help sheltered from and unspoiled by the stresses and ambitious drives that torment "real adults", for whom appearances often become the oppressive burden of everyday life.

Barbie made her debut in 1959 as an "adult" doll to dress for every occasion. In the decades that have followed, her appeal has reached cult status, establishing Barbie as a cultural and commercial phenomenon.

Sales of Barbie dolls have approached staggering levels, at a rate of 2 dolls per second around the world, with 150 new models brought to the market every year. Barbie and her myriad accessories are avidly collected by children and adults alike, yielding endless transformations and limited editions of her.
